European Management Assistants (EUMA) was founded in 1974 and is currently represented in 26 countries. There are approx 1300 members in Europe of which around 160 in Sweden. The official language is English.
The Aims of the Association
To be the recognized voice of the management assistants profession in Europe
- by forming a network of highly competent management assistants able to advise on professional development
- by providing a forum for management assistants, employers and educators to promote an understanding of the training, experience and career opportunities necessary for the development of its members
- by creating an image of the management assistant as an essential element of the management team.
Today's globalized environment needs individuals who are committed to lifelong learning and who are willing to build relationships in a cross-cultural world. EUMA is committed to increasing members' personal and professional efficiency by hosting international meetings that deal with topics related to the current business environment, as well as creating new business opportunities.
Why become a EUMA member? How does the membership benefit me? The best part of being member in EUMA is the network. Through the network you keep yourself updated about the changes within the profession. It is a way to further develop both in terms of personal and professional growth. The membership will even offer you a possibility to travel and make new acquaintances and friends in European countries.
You get an opportunity to participate in a number of national and international conferences, seminars and workshops. Once a year a "Training Day" is arranged somewhere in Europe. Every autumn the Annual General Meeting is arranged in Europe. In connection with the meeting there are seminars with interactive workshops and discussions groups with different themes.
As a member of EUMA Sweden you will belong to one of the regions North, East, West or South. Each region arranges a variety of meetings, seminars, study visits, etc. during the year and you are welcome to participate in the events in any region. In March/April EUMA Sweden arranges its Annual General Meeting and, in connection with this, its annual conference which is open also to non-members. EUMA Sweden continuously runs a number of initiatives and projects, one example is the recurrent mentorship project (see below)
To become a member of European Management Assistants and enjoy the many benefits that the Association can provide, you should work as an assistant, secretary or administrator on management level. As English is the official language of the association, good English skills are essential.

EUMA Profile for Administrators on Management Level© Which duties are today included for an administrator on a management level? We hope that the EUMA Sweden Profile for Administrators on Management Level, published in 2010, will give the answer. In particular, it will identify the work areas that often occur besides the administrative support to one or more managers.
The diversity of our profession can also be seen by the titles that are used today, for example executive assistant, management assistant, coordinator, office manager, travel manager (Swedish: VD-assistent, chefsassistent, chefssekreterare).
The speed of change in today's business world is quick which means that our occupational role requires qualified education, continuous competence development and the right qualities to be able to meet the new requirements. It becomes more and more important to assess the individual's competence and ability to be developed.
The Profile for Administrators on Management Level aims at facilitatíng for assistants/administrators and managers to establish the competence that is required. The profile can be used as an aid for recruitment and when drawing up job descriptions for assistants/administrators.
Through the profile, EUMA also strives to make our profession more visible.
The Mentor Program in EUMA Sweden A mentor program can be carried out as an alternative and/or complement to an education or training or be a continuous developing process on the individual level. It is a relationship between two people with different experiences and backgrounds. Both parties invest in this partnership but the focus is on the development and thoughts of the mentee. A mentor can be chosen within the own organization or outside. The mentor does not involve in the daily work tasks of the mentee.
The mentors guidance may lead to the mentee starting to reconsider, revise or develop his/her skills and attitude. A successful mentor - mentee relationship implies learning from each other and exchanging experiences. The aim of the EUMA mentorship is to develop and support the members in building a strong network.
Five mentor projects have been accomplished within EUMA Sweden. Mentor and mentee met at least once a month. Before the project starts, mentors and mentees discussed their expectations and EUMA Sweden has only good results to report from these projects.
